Rekey Locks in Miami

When you get the keys to a home in Miami, you rarely know how many copies exist. Previous owners, contractors, cleaners, dog walkers and short-term guests may all have had one. We rekey locks in Miami for new owners, renters and landlords, and it takes a single visit: the locks stay on the doors, but only your new keys open them.

What it means to rekey locks

Inside each lock cylinder is a row of small pins cut to match one key. We take the cylinder apart, replace the pins to match a new key, and reassemble it. From outside, however, the lock looks the same. The old key simply no longer turns.

Good reasons to rekey locks in Miami

  • You just closed or signed a lease. This is the most common call we get from new residents.
  • A key is missing. If you lost it with anything showing your address, do not wait.
  • A tenant or roommate moved out. Landlords and property managers often rekey between every tenancy.
  • Someone you no longer trust has a copy.
  • You carry too many keys. We can usually set locks of the same brand to one key for front, back and garage entry doors.

When replacing is the better call

Rekeying only makes sense if the hardware is sound. Near the bay and the ocean, salt air corrodes latches and cylinders, and a lock that sticks or wobbles will keep doing so with new pins.

We will also suggest replacement if the lock is a low-grade model, if a break-in damaged it, or if you want to move to a keypad or smart lock. Therefore, we look at each door and tell you which locks are worth keeping. Options for new hardware are covered on our residential locksmith page.

Condos and HOA buildings

In most Miami condo buildings you are free to rekey your own unit door, but some associations require that management keep a working key for emergencies or that the lock stays on the building’s key system. So check your building rules first, and tell us if a copy needs to go to the front desk.

What a visit looks like

Tell us how many doors and locks you have. Then we arrive, check each lock, rekey the ones that are in good shape, test every door, and hand you the new keys. Most homes take one appointment.

Rekey locks in Miami: common questions

Do you need my current key?

It makes the job faster, but we can rekey without it.

Can a smart lock or keypad deadbolt be rekeyed?

If it has a key cylinder as a backup, usually yes. You change the codes separately.

I manage a storefront or office. Is it the same service?

The principle is the same, but commercial hardware and key control are different. See storefront and office lock service.
